KNOWLEDGE: Opaque Leggings – Materials, Tests & Everyday Wear

Opaque Leggings – What You Really Need to Know

Leggings are among the most versatile garments out there – and one of the most common questions is: “Are leggings opaque or do they become see-through?”

With our Go Wear women’s leggings, you get a secure, dense fabric that stays reliably opaque during workouts and everyday wear.

Here you’ll find all the key facts – clearly explained and based on material science, textile technology and practical testing.

What does “opaque” actually mean when it comes to leggings?

Opaque means: the fabric allows no skin or underwear to show through – whether standing, bending, moving or stretching.

Opacity is influenced by:

  • Fabric thickness (DEN value)
  • Yarn quality
  • Structure & weaving or knitting technique
  • Stitch density
  • Elastane content
  • Fit & stretch behavior

1. Material guide: Which fabrics are opaque?

More details can be found in our material guide.

➤ Nylon / Polyamide + Spandex (20–30%)

The combination of nylon and spandex is the current standard for high-quality sports and fitness leggings.

  • high elasticity
  • smooth, dense stitch structure
  • remains stable even under stretch
  • durable
  • quick-drying and shape-retaining

Opacity: Very high – especially at 250–350 g/m² fabric weight.

➤ Polyester + Spandex

Slightly lighter, smoother and often more affordable.

Opacity: Medium to high – depending on fabric weight.

➤ Cotton Leggings

Soft and comfortable, but:

Opacity: Low to medium – cotton becomes see-through quickly when stretched.

2. The four main reasons why leggings become see-through

  • Fabric too thin
Fabrics below 180–200 g/m² are prone to transparency.
  • Excessive stretching
Too tight → stitches are pulled apart → transparency at the seat & thighs.
  • Wrong size
Too small = less opacity due to overstretching.
  • Bright, strong light
Even dense fabrics may appear slightly translucent in sunlight.

3. How can you identify high-quality, opaque leggings?

  • At least 20% spandex – stretch without transparency
  • High-density knit – tightly stitched
  • 250–350 g/m² fabric weight – fitness standard
  • 4-way stretch – no thinning
  • High-waist cut – secure fit & opacity

Our Go Wear women’s leggings meet all of these criteria.

4. FAQ: Frequently asked questions about opaque leggings

  • What does “squat proof” mean for leggings?
“Squat proof” means the leggings do not become see-through during squats – especially around the seat and thighs. Fabric weight, dense knit construction and proper fit are key.
  • Are black leggings always opaque?
Not necessarily. Black appears visually denser, but if the fabric is too thin or the size too small, even black leggings can become see-through when stretched. The squat test is more reliable than color.
  • Which fabrics are safest if opacity is important to me?
High-quality blends of polyamide/nylon with spandex (elastane) are very reliable when densely knitted and sufficiently weighted. Cotton has a much higher risk of transparency when stretched.
  • Why do leggings sometimes become more transparent after washing?
Hot washing, tumble drying or fabric softener can damage fibers and elastane. This reduces tension, softens the fabric and makes it thin out faster when stretched. Best practice: gentle wash, low temperatures, no fabric softener.
  • Which size should I choose to prevent leggings from becoming see-through?
Correct sizing is crucial for opacity. If leggings are too small, stitches stretch apart and the fabric becomes transparent – especially in the seat area. If you’re between sizes and want maximum opacity, the larger size is often the safer choice.

5. How can you test whether leggings are truly opaque?

  • Stretch test: Pull the fabric apart – can you see the stitches?
  • Squat test: Do a squat in front of a mirror – visible = not opaque.
  • Light test: Hold the fabric against a window – light penetration is critical.
  • Flash test: Take a photo with flash – transparency becomes immediately visible.

6. Which leggings are best for which use?

Fitness / Gym / Squats

  • 250–350 g/m²
  • Nylon + 20–30% spandex
  • High stretch without thinning

Recommendation: Go Wear sports leggings.
